Baron Leather, Genuinely Sustainable

We applaud Baron Leather for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product label. Products from Baron Leather are contributing to an ever-expanding marketplace that adds value to renewable agriculture commodities, creates jobs in rural communities, and decreases our reliance on petroleum.

According to a report that USDA released in July 2019, biobased products contributed $459 billion to the U.S. economy in 2016 (a 17% increase from 2014) and support, directly and indirectly, 4.6 million jobs. The report’s research team estimates the reduction of fossil fuels and associated GHG emissions from biobased products equivalent to approximately 12 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (Co2) prevented as of 2016. The increased production of renewable chemicals and biobased products contributes to the development and expansion of the U.S. bioeconomy – where society looks to agriculture for sustainable sources of fuel, energy, chemicals, and products.

– Hides are delivered fresh, eliminating the use of wet salts or freezing.

2. Pre-Tanning

– H2O2 and polypropylene drums must be used to eliminate strippers and toxic chemicals.
– Management of byproducts - The by-products of our by-product (leather) are an upcycled item with a higher added value. Trimmings, fleshes and suspended solids are protein rich which constitute a secondary raw material for other processes, i.e. fertilizers and cosmetics.

3. Tanning

These hides are tanned using natural and organic tannins, free from the addition of heavy metals or chromium, The use of bio-based products makes it 78% renewable. Our green innovation process is constantly evolving. Pure is tanned with max. - 30% water, in 100% renewable derived electricity, and metal free less than 0.1%. Our metal free organic tanning, approved by the USDA*R*, provides an alternative to the conventional heavy metal driven tanning and non-biodegradable products. Pure is tanned using sustainable products such as bio-renewable chemicals, agricultural, and forestry materials. For the finishing, things like leaves, tree bark, seed pods, roots and other non-synthetic materials are used to obtain the deep and rich colors offered in the finished product.

“We are proud to develop solutions, advanced processes, and integrated technologies using renewable and energy efficient methods to revolutionize production.
